December literally took it outta me. I was sick at the beginning of the month and then sick at the end.
Here are some selected pics from December:
After Christmas I went with some family for a few days in New Orleans. Good eatin’, drinkin’ and company.
The last few weeks I feel like I was lost in fog. Off from the day job for the Christmas holiday I took a step back from all work (as we all should from time to time). It was just a somber holiday this year. With the pain still real from Greta, my wife said good bye to another best friend after she lost her battle to cancer. The community and the world just won’t be the same without Dr. Roni Dean Burren.
Between mourning our friends and the eroding state of the civilized world, what with the atrocities happening in Gaza and Africa and such, it was actually quite easy to shut down. I slept a lot this holiday and I wasn’t even trying. And still, after a spirited holiday in the N-O, I couldn’t shake off this foggy melancholy. Then I caught a stomach bug which impeded my eating and drinking for the next few days, including coffee. And that resulted some pounding caffeine headaches which just added to my silent misery.
Granted, after a fews days fasting with just water and some sweaty nights I was able to shake the bug. I caught a sip of some caffeine to quell the pounding, and the very next day I started feeling like myself again. Deciding to post some work-in-progess shots I got excited to get back to it once again.
Work in Progress
So, the new story, 59 pages long, is completely finished with the flat background work. All that’s left is to go in page by page and finish out the grey tones. The backgrounds are done with the gradient tool in Photoshop and then imported into Procreate for the detailed greys. I’ve only exported to page 16 but I believe I’m up past page 30 by now. The iPad has streamlined the work and made it faster! Here’s what some of the panels look like:
I’ll export some more pages and post more snips soon enough. The preliminary work is almost complete for the next story. Basically, I try to have all the character designs worked out before I begin penciling . One final character is almost worked out, so I think I’ll begin that very soon. The script is sitting on my desk, I just have to draw it! After that the process begins anew: scan, clean up, and then greytones on the iPad. Soon after I’ll have a fresh new book. But first things first…
Gotta break out some pencils!
