2024 continues to lurch on, and so does the work! This new streamlining of work seems to be super effective. Not only do I crank out inked pages with the quickness, finishing them up with the greytones on the iPad is boatloads faster than before; I can turn out two to three pages in the time it took the old-sytem’s one (the old system is a mouse and Photoshop). So the work is getting done at a much faster rate, so fast it’s causing me to question whether I’m missing something or “is the work even any good?” What do you think?
The Zunovu story rolls along, I decided to begin the second major story in Screw Comics! 5. It’s not quite a surprise or anything considering I made an ad for it appearing in Screw Comics! 3, but in that regard it’s been a long time coming.
What started as a riff between my gf (now wife) and I about the star shape on her bathing suit top turned into a full-fledged comic story about a woman who gets incredible superpowers after being hit in the breast by a cosmic rock from space. It’s been almost ten years and I can remember riffing up the idea as we waded in the tepid green waters of East Beach, Galveston. Later on, I drew a few sketches and even went in on an ad (above) that appeared in book 3. But the project was shelved as I worked on other projects.
Over the last few years I perfected a treatment and built up the characters and the world in a notes file. But a comic just wasn’t going to jump off unless I had a script, so then a script was soon banged out. I even received the go ahead from my wife after she read it, after all she inspired it! And, sure, it’s another superhero story in world where Marvel and DC have fatigued us with their constant output over the last decade or so, but then again it’s a superhero story written by ME.
I’m about 30 pages into penciling and I was too excited so I started lettering and inking as well, up to page 16.
Starboob is shaping up to be special comic story for me, not only because of who it’s inspired by, but the writing and the art seem to be drawing on some of my more lesser known comic influences. I’ll talk about it more in the months to come when we see how this story shapes up. More progress as it comes!
