Last Tuesday, the city of Houston shut down, came to a stand-still, and froze as a winter storm swooped through the southern United States. Weather reports stated would be in for 5 inches of snow or more. While we all heeded the reports, nobody really thought about what that entailed.
“Five inches of snow? In Houston? Get real…” some people scoffed. Others were just worried about the power grid and how that would hold up. Impending reports of frozen temps conjured some PTSD from the deep freeze of 2021.
I was jostled out of my slumber early Tuesday morning by my wife who ran into the bedroom exclaiming “The Snow! The Snow! Get up and see!” Indeed it was such a sight and experience I wouldn’t go back to bed that morning.
When I was a kid and there were talks of Houston getting snow, THIS is what we all imagined. Instead we always got sleet, accumulating enough to form a faint, temporary slush on the ground that would dissipate by the day’s end.
No, this was the real deal.
The city shut down for 48 hours, and the citizens basked in a snow day. It was a mini-vacation where we couldn’t go anywhere and nothing was open anyway. You couldn’t do too much around the house out of fear of using too much electricity. Everybody had to chill, literally. People went sledding in Hermann Park.
I most certainly will not forget our little snow day last week, and I wanted to share these pics with you all.
