Pleasant Weekend Greetings, Toonsters!
Lately I’ve been obsessed with the game Horizon Zero Dawn, I’ve been playing it since I first got it back in January. Basically, you’re a primitive tribal woman who roams the vast expanse of the continent hunting for hints about the forgotten past, and you must defend yourself against killer robot machines that take the shape of various animals. It’s a very addictive game; the controls are solid, taking down machines is very satisfying, and there’s soooo much to do. It may not be hard to guess what influenced the piece above.
About that piece, long-time collaborator and music connoisseur Lee Lawson (a local DJ) hit me up for a new piece. I’m his go-to guy for all things art related because his thing is solely music, so we’ve been working together damn near 20 years. He told me he’s starting an online streaming show and he needed something eye-catching to go along with it. The show title is the Midnight Spin Mix Show. After showing him various sketches with more time-oriented themes, he stopped me on this concept and told me to run with it. Inspired by the beautiful and terrifying designs of the robot animals of Horizon Zero Dawn I finished up the concept for him.
The art is entirely digital, drawn in the Procreate app. Background colors and text handled in Photoshop.
And that’s not the only concept I hashed out this month. My little sister Samantha hit me up for a logo for a new podcast project she’s working on.
Her first project, Nothing Matters, is still going pretty strong a year and half after she started it. I did the art for that one (can you tell?). But the new concept is pretty cool; she’s basically crossing over into the swath of geekdom known as Star Wars Fans by, having never seen any of the films ever, partaking in Star Wars media in timeline order and then discussing it with a special friend.
After mulling around for a suitable title The Padawan & Protocol Podcast was knighted. Main art is ink and paper, colors in Procreate, and finishes in Photoshop.
So, now that I revealed I did some work for some local creators and purveyors of ideas, here are links to said creators so you can dig in yourself!
Lee Lawson’s The Midnight Spin Mix Show - Fridays & Saturdays at Midnight CST. Catch it HERE, bookmark it and tune in on the weekends! He’s known for his screwed and chopped mixes but has been spinning all types of music laltely. Also check out Lee Lawson on Instagram.

And of course The Padawan & Protocol Podcast is HERE.
Now that you have some other cool stuff to check out I can go back to my robot hunting. I’m so close to finishing the game, it’s been an epic journey so far. ‘Til next time!
