The state takeover of HISD is progressing. The publicly elected school board has been replaced by TEA cronies, and a new superintendent has been installed. Mike Miles, with a background in the military and a CEO of his own charter school company, has been selected to lead the school district. Clearly, he can lead h̶i̶s̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶p̶a̶n̶y̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶o̶r̶e̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶f̶i̶t̶s the district to success. Once again I was tapped to update the original piece I drew with his melting face. I came up with the tank image, and threw that in as well.
Once again, a podcast to explain stuff.
After I did the initial HISD takeover art I learned a bit more about how and why these sorts of things happen. Would you believe me if I told you that more often than not school district takeovers are politically motivated? Since HISD wasn’t really “failing” to begin with it was never about helping kids (LOL, imagine Gov. Abbott doing something that actually helped kids). HISD is the biggest district in Texas, nestled within the the largest (blue) county in the state. Looks to me like the Republican-led Texas legislature has a big hard-on for tamping down Liberals in the state because this isn’t the only campaign they’re handing down to us.
Senate Bill 1933, authored by state Sen. Paul Bettencourt, a Harris County Republican, grants the Texas secretary of state the authority to investigate election “irregularities” after complaints are filed — but only in counties with more than 4 million people, which means just Harris County.

Ain’t that convenient? The biggest county in Texas that also happens to vote Democrat in every election can now have it’s votes thrown out if deemed “irregular”, whatever that means. This is all under the guise of preventing voter fraud, a broad term used by people who don’t like the outcomes of certain elections.
This is what we mean when non-Republican people say we’re being held hostage in the South. People dismiss the South with “oh, if you don’t like those laws/politics why don’t you vote?” Well, we do vote, but gerrymandering and other unfair voter rules stifle the public. And then those in power put through more rules and regulations to disenfranchise people. It’s the same in all other southern states, and they’re coming for the whole country. It’s happening already. Haven’t you noticed things that most Americans want (cough cough gun control cough) just go ignored? These people don’t represent us; I’m not talking about party lines, I mean appealing to human decency.
But hey, didn’t mean to bum you out. If it makes you feel any better I’d like to remind you that these people are flesh and blood humans with names, address and bank accounts just like us…
Next post won’t be depressing like this, I promise!
